Curtain Raiser

General consumer preference for production of chemical free feed along with increasing ban on chemicals in last 15 years has speeded up the search for novel feed additives in animal feed which may come from natural sources. Essential oils from Herbals and Phyto-tonic herbs having beneficial effect as gut function modulator are in the category of Novel Feed Additives (NFA). This search has further broadened up opportunity to look for compounds from nature which mimics the action produced by chemical additives. Over the last 10 years, ever increasing prices of Synthetic methionine have made it necessary to find out cost effective feed additives and alternatives for supplementation without sacrificing productivity for low cost feeding. The solution definitely comes from ‘back to nature’ where inherent native compounds and precursors are present and mimics similar functions.

This voyage to search and evaluate these substances has opened the doors for alternatives from the natural herbal compounds which have shown to be equally effective yet more cost effective. Methiorep, a promising Natural product has shown excellent results to mimic the biological action produced by synthetic methionine.  Methiorep over the last 5 years has undergone stringent scrutiny by poultry experts not only in India, but also abroad, generating the results that it does have the mimicking action. Still, these research findings require a call for debate to have a more scientific scrutiny for its replacement value.

Key Points

  • India imports 17,000 Tons of Methionine worth 400 Crores INR. Novel Feed additives, with Bio-mimicking herbs are available as cost effecting solution for its replacement value.
  • One such product, Methiorep (Novel Feed Additives) has gone through scientific scrutiny both in India and abroad resulting into  more than 20 Research Publications.
  • Even 20% of it supplementation cost can be saved by these Novel Feed Alternatives,  then it would be great value for farmers and Nation in term of Savings of foreign Exchange

Customizing and Personalizing My Site

Experience of last ten years has given us a plethora of options and as a result in scientific community ‘the debate is on’ - Whether these herbal additives used as replacements of chemicals are stretch of imagination or have strong scientific evidences? This journey of Development of Novel Feed Additives, starting with poultry, can be applied and further studied in other animal species also.

An estimate of monetary benefit can be seen by Methiorep (NFA) in Table 2 at different percentage of replacement values.

Therefore, Ayurvet steps forward to provide a platform for scientists, nutritionists and farmers of Animal Health Industry to discuss upon the concept of novel feed additives in one day technical seminar in Delhi. Here, lead talks would be from the scientific investigators who have investigated these alternatives and they will discuss, deliberate and share their experiences about their part of usage in this seminar.
